For the past eighteen months, a group of people from NOW have been meeting to play badminton once a week at the courts on Gillies Ave. The group was started by Nag Gorantla, who has also taken on all the administrative overhead, including the weekly cat herding to find out who's playing and how many courts we need. (Hats off Nag, this is no small task and is much appreciated by all those involved)
At NOW, we encourage our people to get involved in sport, especially as a group. It's been a huge part of our culture for a very long time, as our regular readers would have seen with the biking and running weekends we do. When Nag first suggested starting the Badminton group, I don't think anyone expected it to be such a big hit. With ten people attending most weeks, it is by far the best attended and most consistently run sports event that NOW have ever run. And that's competing with quite a few avid runners and cyclists within NOW who like to ride/run together pretty regularly.
Skills levels are quite varied, from Jimmy and Carl, the promising youngsters, to Priyank, Graham, Nag, Dhar, Tommy, (ok, everyone else) the veteran pro-team.
There have been tears, most notably anyone who's taken a shuttle-cock in the face from Lijo, and Steve finding out that his Achilles heel is his Achilles heel (rest up big guy).
There have also been many, many smiles. Every game we play involves a great mix friendly competitive banter, self-mocking, mocking and general tomfoolery that I think we spend more time laughing than we do playing the game.
