What Does Gifts for Kids Do?
Gifts for Kids provides Christmas gifts to kids who, because of family hardship and through no fault of their own, wouldn't otherwise have a single present to open a Christmas day. We give them a chance to experience a little of the special magic of Christmas.
Why do we do it?
I don’t know if you’ve ever imagined what Christmas would’ve been like if you hadn’t had presents to open, under the Christmas tree or in a stocking at the end of your bed. Imagine how you would have felt if there wasn’t even a single present for you to unwrap on Christmas morning. I'm guessing it would’ve been a pretty sad Christmas for you, wouldn’t it?
How Long Has Gifts for Kids Been in Operation and How Many Kids Does It Help?
This was the 6th GiftsForKids Christmas. We started GiftsForKids in 2012 and that first Christmas Plunket delivered gifts to 80 kids in west Auckland. For Christmas 2017, with the generous financial support of WhereScape/NOW Consulting, and the staff who dipped into their own pockets, as well as a number of other individuals and organisations, we raised just over $20,500 to buy presents. Working closely with Plunket we bought, wrapped and delivered Christmas gifts for over 940 children in the West Auckland and Panmure/Glen Innes/Mt Wellington area. Kids who wouldn't have had a single present to unwrap on Christmas morning.
Gifts for Kids is Now a Registered Charity
It's been an amazing ride since 2012 and Gifts for Kids has continued to grow and grow because of help and support from organisations like WhereScape/NOW Consulting and the team. Our long term vision is to make sure that there are no kids that miss out on experiencing a little of the magic of Christmas because their family is not in a position to buy them even a single present. So in June 2017, we applied to Charities Services for Gifts for Kids to become a registered charity. The good news is we received confirmation, two weeks before Christmas 2017, that Gifts for Kids Inc. had been approved as a registered charity!
Note that all the money donated goes towards buying gifts. No one gets paid.
Plunket Is a Key Partner for the Gifts for Kids Program
We couldn’t do any of this without Plunket. Because they have regular contact with every family that has children (pretty much everyone), this means they are ideally placed to identify the families that wouldn’t be able to afford a present for their children. Lisa-May is the operational mastermind behind the logistical project to manage the identification of all the children who won’t get a single present, and then making sure, on the wrapping night, that:
- each present is wrapped and the right kid’s name label goes on the right gift
- the right presents go in the right bag(s) for the right family
- the right bags for the right families are ready go out for delivery in the week before Christmas, so the Plunket nurses can manage deliveries around their heavy time commitments of their day jobs
What was WhereScape’s/NOW Consulting's contribution?
WhereScape/NOW Consulting contributed $2000 and thanks to a little arm twisting from Nick Haywood the WhereScape/NOW Consulting team opened their hearts and their wallets to contribute another $1089.40. A total of $3089.40 – that's outstanding! The generous support meant another 130 kids got to look forward to a present to unwrap all week, and then got to open their gift on Christmas morning. Thank you so much.
